{"id":2053,"date":"2023-04-28T06:21:20","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T06:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/press.defyhatenow.org\/?p=2053"},"modified":"2023-07-17T12:04:07","modified_gmt":"2023-07-17T12:04:07","slug":"newsupfront-cameroon-media-leaders-resolve-to-uphold-free-speech-defy-hate-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/press.defyhatenow.org\/fr\/newsupfront-cameroon-media-leaders-resolve-to-uphold-free-speech-defy-hate-2\/","title":{"rendered":"NewsUpfront: Cameroon: media leaders resolve to uphold free speech, defy hate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"2053\" class=\"elementor elementor-2053\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-16cd426 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"16cd426\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-dd8d182\" data-id=\"dd8d182\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02a00c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"02a00c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Media Leaders\u2019 Declaration on upholding free speech, countering hate speech\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p>Upholding Free Speech and Countering Hate Speech in the Media: Striking a Balance<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Story, Louvier Kindo Tombe<\/strong><\/p><p>In the past years, there has been an increase in the number of hate speech in Cameroon driven by a number of factors resolving around political, cultural and social crisis in the country.<\/p><p>Besides a resurgence of the use of hate speech, there is also the introduction of new forms of hate speech, and media experts are worried about the risk these pose to social cohesion, national unity and democracy in the country.<\/p><p><em>\u201cSome of the impacts we are already seeing is a strong sense of mistrust between the different segments of our society,\u201d Eugene Nforngwa, Executive Director of the Rainforest Center for Policy Research (RCPR) said at the opening of the media leaders forum.<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The media leaders forum was a valuable opportunity to exchange views and experiences on how to better promote free speech and counter hate speech and misinformation within the media in Cameroon.<\/p><p>More than 60 media leaders and stakeholders from different sectors attended the forum.<em>\u201cCombating hate speech in the media cannot be done with the media alone,\u201d Thiery Ndong, publisher of Integration news paper said.<\/em><\/p><p>The leaders from print, audiovisual and online media organs for close to 6 hours, discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the media in Cameroon especially in the context of ongoing crisis and tensions.<\/p><p>Focus on one hand was on the conceptual, legal and ethical foundations of hate speech and free speech, and on the other hand, challenges and best practices for media, civil society and policy makers<\/p><p>During the panel discussions, one of the challenges identified in promoting free speech and fighting hate language was the existence of numerous media associations and unions in the country.<\/p><p><em>\u201cWe need to operate from a united front,\u201d Jude Viban, National President of CAMASEJ said.<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>CAMASEJ is the Cameroon association of english speaking journalists.<\/p><p>According to the German ambassador to Cameroon, H. E. Corinna FRICKE, who attended the opening ceremony of the forum,<strong><em>\u00a0\u201chate in the internet or press cannot only destroy people or groups but it can split a society by extremism or idealogy\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p>The importance of defying hate now can not be over emphasized given the rapid growth of the social media.<em>\u201cOur resistance to hate speech is essential if we are to protect our free speech,\u201d Corinna FRICKE said.<\/em><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong><em>\u201cIt\u2019s important to have the right balance between freedom of press and defy hate.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>Speaking at the forum, the hate speech focal point at the ministry of communication in Cameroon, Mr Ayina Nyassa Ghislain said\u00a0<strong><em>\u201cwhen different media leaders come together with partners and the government, the message will definitely go across\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><em>\u201cWe need to multiply such initiatives,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/p><p>The organisation of the forum was also to contribute to peace building and development in the country.<\/p><p><em>\u201cIt is in the brains and the minds that we have to sow the seed of peace,\u201d Huge Ndi, scribe at UNESCO Cameroon said.<\/em><\/p><p><strong><em>\u201cWe have seen international partners and the state of Cameroon here, we are hoping that the synergy goes beyond media leaders to actually support this action,\u201d Ngala Desmond Ngala, country representative of Defyhatenow said.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>The commitment<\/strong><\/p><p>At the end of the Yaounde forum, the different media leaders unanimously declare to strike a balance in upholding free speech and countering hate speech in the media.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsupfront.com\/media-leaders-declaration-on-upholding-free-speech-countering-hate-speech\/\"><strong><em>Click Here to See Declaration<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p><p>In the declaration, the media leaders condemn hate speech as a violation of human rights, comit to respect principles of democracy and freedom of expression, vow to refrain from spreading misinformation and propaganda, calls on different stakeholders to unite forces in the fight among others.<\/p><p>The media leaders forum was organised by the Rainforest Center for Policy Research (RCPR) in partnership with Association Civic Watch and rOg agency for open culture and critical transformation with the support of other partners.<\/p><p>It was part of activities to mark World Press Freedom Day 2023.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section
